Session 1:
Defining your project. What a memoir is … and isn’t. Genre: the difference between nonfiction and creative nonfiction. Gathering your materials, identifying your resources, conducting interviews.

Session 2:
Inserting yourself into your memoir. To what degree are you an observer/recorder? A participant? A contributor? Or the main character? What tone do you want to set, and how do you do that? What is “writer’s voice”?

Session 3:
Describing people, developing characters, writing dialogue.

Session 4:
Creating historical context. Setting your story in an era. Incorporating cultural elements. A thematic approach versus a chronology?

Session 5:
Describing settings and places. Creating scenes. Depicting holidays and special events.

Session 6:
Storytelling. Making events memorable. Becoming an effective narrator. Drawing meaningful conclusions that satisfy your reader.

Session 7:
Creating emotion. Writing to evoke laughter, to bring forth tears.

Session 8:
Sharing your memoir with others. Recruiting proofreaders, requesting feedback. Getting your story out to an audience, to readers.

Make this your best winter project ever!
